James Razzell is our latest Organ Scholar
Congratulations to James Razzell, our fourth Michael Swindlehurst Organ Scholar.
James has been in the choir as St Mary’s for over 8 years and in that time has developed a love of the organ. He is about to embark on A levels at Saffron Walden County High School, studying Music, Latin, History and Physics, and is a member of the SWCHS Music Academy.
James said, “I am honoured to have been offered the position of Michael Swindlehurst Organ Scholar, and I am very grateful for this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to begin!”
Scholars receive a grant and the scholarship provides organ tuition and opportunities for the successful applicant to develop a range of musical skills in a supportive environment. The Organ Scholar will be based at Saffron Walden, with the exception of one Sunday per month being spent at Wendens Ambo.
Oliver King, the Director of Music at St Mary’s, said, “We had a very strong field of candidates this year and I am absolutely delighted that James will be our next organ scholar. James demonstrated a real aptitude and enthusiasm for this role and we are thrilled to be working with him over the course of the scheme.”
Michael Swindlehurst was a much-loved member of the church and wider community. He was a volunteer at the Museum, a leading member of the United Nations Association, and involved in the History Society, the Talking Book and many other organisations. Michael was also a great supporter of the music at St Mary’s and the scheme both honours his memory and provides an opportunity for the comprehensive, holistic and professional training of young church musicians.
