The originals are held at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford, CM2 6YT (Tel: +44 (0) 1245 244644 or email:enquiry@essexcc.gov.uk). Most of the records up to 1700 have been digitised, whilst others have been microfiched and cataloged, and details can be found at www.essex.gov.uk/ero – select (click on) the SEAX in the centre of the page, then look for “Essex Ancestors” upper right hand side of page, this gets you to the parish registers – select Saffron Walden, then St Mary’s.

Apart from two exceptions there have been no burials in St Mary’s churchyard since 1892. St Mary’s Churchyard. It should be noted that before the cemetery was opened in 1857, burials took place in the Parish Church or Nonconformist graveyards. Burial plans and lists of these can be found at the ERO Archive Access office in Saffron Walden Library.
