Fundraising for Ukraine

Two recent events organised by St Mary's Church Saffron Walden to raise funds for the crisis in Ukraine.

A Concert featuring the choir, friends and musicians of St Mary's on Saturday 12th March 2022

This concert raised £4844.41which is being divided between Ukrainian appeals by The British Red Cross, UNICEF and WITH Ukraine (a special fund set up by the Ukrainian Embassy in London).

The concert by about 40 choir members and musicians was warmly appreciated by a 200 plus audience.

Ukrainian cakes-2609Introducing the concert, the Rector, the Rev’d Jeremy Trew, said there was joy in coming and working together even at this sad time. Kateryna Shotropa, who, with her family, has been collecting and sorting donations to take to Ukraine, said she was amazed how the community had come together in support.

She was warmly applauded. The Mayor, Councillor Richard Porch, said that there was a collection bucket in the Tourist Information Centre in the Market Square to collect funds to transport these donations to Ukraine.

The concert predominantly focussed on the themes of peace, hope and remembrance. A poem by the poet George Szirtes had been specifically written for the occasion. As well as choir and solo pieces, the concert included piano, organ and French horn and piano pieces. The concert ended to a standing ovation.
