The Revd David Tomlinson, the new rector for Saffron Walden took up his post as Team Rector for the Saffron Walden Team Ministry on Sunday 21st September. A keen cricketer and a West Ham supporter, his institution and induction by the Bishop of Colchester, The Right Reverend Christopher Morgan was at 5.00p.m. in St Mary’s Church, Saffron Walden.

David with his wife Jenny, who is also an ordained priest, and their two daughters moved into Saffron Walden Rectory recently from Grays in South Essex. They have been spending time getting familiar with the area and settling in.

David had a variety of jobs in his twenties before training for ordination. He worked in Whitehall as a civil servant. Two years teaching mathematics and preaching in the local churches in a remote Ugandan village followed. On his return, he took up a post at a school in North London.

David went to theological college at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, where he met Jenny who was by then in her third year. Jenny read history at university. She then spent six years living in Surrey, where she worked in NHS management before training for ordination. In June 1993, after David had finished his training, they were married. They worked in neighbouring parishes in Godalming, near Guildford where their two daughters were born. Grays in South Essex was the setting for their next phase of ministry. David was a Vicar and Area Dean of Thurrock for five years. Jenny combined parish ministry with work as healthcare chaplain for the local Primary Care Trust.

David enjoys playing cricket, as a left-handed batsmen and wicketkeeper, playing as frequently as he can for the diocese of Chelmsford. Through thick and thin, he has supported West Ham Football club for over 40 years. His other interests include cooking, walking, reading and films. Jenny enjoys gardening, reading, and music, especially singing.

David said "We are delighted to be here and very grateful for the warm welcome that we've received. We look forward to getting to know people, and to all that God has in store in the coming years."

The previous rector Reverend Canon Duncan Green left Saffron Walden in October 2007 following his appointment as Church of England Co-ordinator for the Olympics and Paralympics for London 2012.
