Hi, for those who don’t know me I’m Matt and I have recently been appointed as the new Children’s and Youth Leader at St Mary’s. I’ve been asked to tell you a little bit about myself. I am originally from Dereham in Norfolk. I have an older sister called Frankie and a younger brother called Andy. I also have two beautiful nieces called Megan and Tegan who are 5 and nearly 2. I enjoy all kinds of sports but mainly football and cricket. One of my main passions in life is music. When I was 16 I taught myself to play the drums and I also play the guitar.
I have been in youth work since I was 18. It all started when I did a year out with Norwich Youth for Christ and a local church. Here I worked alongside a number of youth workers around the Norwich area. A year later my friend made me audition for a band called Taste to be their drummer. I auditioned and somehow got in. Here I met La Roche, who you may know as Sam the operations coordinator at St Marks College. Whilst in Taste we toured around the UK and parts of Germany going into high schools and taking RE lessons with a difference. The difference was there were games, video clips and songs which I never had in my RE lessons. All the songs would have a message behind them about God and the choice we have to follow Him. At the end of the week in the school we would put on a concert where we would share the Gospel message with the young people.
Whilst on tour in Gorleston, Norfolk, I met up with my old boss from Norwich Youth for Christ. Here he offered me the chance to do the CYM degree course in Cambridge and work at Belton Church. I accepted this and really enjoyed my time at Belton. I finished my degree this year and graduate in October.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at St Mary’s for their warm welcome and I am looking forward to working with the children and young people of Saffron Walden and St Mary’s.
