Aftershock Weekend Away: ‘Stories and Journeys’

Our story
Stories we hear
Stories we tell
Stories we are part of
Jesus’ story
Our part in it

On Friday 25th February a group of teenagers from St Mary’s Aftershock Youth Group headed off in a minibus to the Rock UK site in Northampton. After setting up our rooms and making our beds we had dinner and our first meeting with Anthony, who was teaching us for the weekend. We were introduced to the theme for the weekend; ’Stories and Journeys’, and afterwards had some free time which included a game of Cranium and lots of hot chocolate!

Saturday dawned with many groans as we tried to wake up and get going, but Tracey’s lovely breakfast was very welcome, and we followed this with our first morning session looking at the Parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. After lunch we headed over to the sports centre for a circus skills session with our instructors. We learnt to spin plates, juggle and use Diablo and trick-sticks and we also had some parachute games. After dinner it was too wet for a campfire so we all headed to the living area to watch the film ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and stay up late!

On Sunday morning we had breakfast and did some packing, before our final session and Communion. Anthony answered questions, triggered from the things we had been thinking about in the sessions, from our question box. They included questions about creation, mistakes, and suffering. This was followed by our Communion service, which Anthony talked us through. Many of us had heard the words used many, many times before, but Anthony put them into a new light, so we could really get to grips with every detail, including a long look at the Lords prayer. We had all recited this one prayer many times before, as one part of the communion service, or at school, but it is a prayer to be prayed every day, as it asks for the basic requirements for our life: “our daily bread”. We enjoyed our final meal together then worked on a banner showing our memories of the weekend, before leaving at 4.00pm to head back to Saffron Walden.

A big thank-you to Andy, Tamar, Tracey, Rob, Vikky and Anthony, as without their organisation, cooking, help and support the weekend away wouldn’t have been half so good!
