Visit to Embu Diocese, Kenya
The Rev’d Rachel Prior and the Rev’d John Saxon, who were recently ordained as priests at St. Mary’s Church, Saffron Walden, set off on Monday 15th October to visit Kenya.
Every few years, the Diocese of Chelmsford arranges a visit for its curates in connection with their link Diocese of Marsabit in Kenya. Rachel and John will be taking part in the upcoming trip in October, led by Rev’d Lee Batson, to Embu Diocese. The visit will involve Bible study, visits to schools, hospitals, parishes and projects. Following a two-day break, work will resume with the group separating to stay in rural parishes, preaching and carrying out pastoral visits and then returning to visit Nairobi.
Rachel is excited to be going, nervous about preaching through a translator and looking forward to sharing reflections of her experiences afterwards. She said, “I’m looking forward to seeing the Church from a different angle, and learning more about God’s boundless grace from my Kenyan brothers and sisters” John added, “This is an exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing how God’s love reaches all peoples and how they respond in their worship and with their lives. This will be particularly interesting in a culture so different from ours.” Their visit is funded jointly by the Chelmsford Diocese, the Saffron Walden Parochial Church Council, Rachel and John.
The Rector, Rev’d Canon David Tomlinson commented, “This is a great opportunity for John and Rachel to learn about the church in Kenya and to know God’s faithfulness in a very different culture.”
